Officials say 16-year-old burned alive

Phnom Penh Post

Soldiers kill boy caught logging in Thailand, district governor says.

Oddar Meanchey officials Sunday accused Thai soldiers of shooting a Cambodian teenager and burning him alive.

Yon Rith, 16, was killed after Thai armed forces accused him of illegally felling trees, said Thon Nol, governor of Samrong district in Oddar Meanchey province.

Thon Nol said Yon Rith was first arrested and then burned. Another teenager from the same village in Kon Kreal commune, 18-year-old Mao Kleung, was also shot and seriously wounded, he said, but villagers managed to carry him to Cambodian territory, and he is is now in an Oddar Meanchey hospital.

Officials on Sunday denounced the violence as "cruel" acts carried out on unarmed villagers.

"Why did they burn a person alive? [The armed forces] should have arrested them if they did anything wrong in Thailand," said Pich Ratana, a Cabinet official in Oddar Meanchey.

"Our armed forces did not shoot Thai citizens when they were hunting animals in the Cambodian forest. They just arrested them and sent them back, but Thai soldiers do cruel things to innocent Cambodians," Pich Ratana said.

Thon Nol said officials would discuss the incident today.

"We are looking for all measures to assist the victims as well as actions on the Thai authority," Thon Nol said.

Thai Embassy officials could not be reached for comment Sunday.

Nanh Sovann, a Cambodian military officer who has worked with the Thai military, said Sunday he had heard of the incident but was waiting to see an official report before intervening.

The victim's family recovered his charred body and took it to their village for a funeral the day he was shot, Thon Nol said.

Thai officials have previously taken a heavy hand against Cambodians accused of illegal logging on Thai territory, particularly along the Oddar Meanchey border.

In August, 12 Cambodians were arrested along the border on suspicion of illegally logging.

Their disappearance initially prompted fears they had been killed, but the Thais have since revealed the men are in detention.

Two other men, however, were discovered dead last month. The Thai military said soldiers fired on the group in self-defence.

hey folks....I am so sad to learn such a miserable incident. The boy did that for only one reason: get out of hunger. However, the reason is incredibly bitter. We should blame our government for not being able to create job. This boy is not the only victim of illegal border-crossing crime; there are hundred of thousand of Khmers who have been living in Thailand have suffered so much from inhumanly mistreated behavior of Thai authority, and I believe that only the government with the will can help them out of this miserable circumstance. about 7 million people are eligible to work but no jobs for them. thus crossing to neighboring countries is a way for them to persist though the end result may be similar to the boy's case.

7:33pm, whether that poor kid knowingly crossing the border legally or illegally into Thialand, he didn't deserve to be burned alive by Thai soldiers. If he broke the law, the Thai soldiers should arrest him and send him back to Cambodia, let Cambodia laws deal with that. Please show some sympathy for the victim. Try not to divert attention toward blaming the government of Cambodia for the kid death. Even if there were jobs and everyone was employed, that kid would still be burned alive by Thai soldiers. The bastards Thai are all hell-bent up to harm Cambodia and its citizen regardless.

Neither do I support Thai soldiers committing the crime nor I tried to divert the issue but the fact is so many more Cambodian have greatly suffered in Thailand and the case of the boy is an awareness to reshape our future. I really do express my condolence to death' family for their great loss and their great loss has given me so much attention to those who live in Thailand, don't you care? and I hope that through diplomatic reciprocation with Thai government, those criminals will be tried. Folk, I stand at my point that the correlated factor to this indescribable incidence is the unemployment. If you don't point out and government does not act upon, future results remain like that!

Thais,

You have no human beings feeling. The 16 years old "Rith" was arrested by Thais Soldiers and burned alive. It's a true, but you all turned it as fun. You have no human feeling. You are all animals. I don't know how you think about your people action. If you are really a budishm, you should have feeling about that kids. Think about it, if he was your brother or your kid how would feel about it?

I believe you all make Cambodian people hate you. And the world look that way to. Today, American people and government stand with Cambodian people. Although you are richer than us, but the world has changed. We have many good friends, who are human not like you people.

I want to see the boy scott of Thais products will continue around the world with those who love peace and justice. You cannot live alone.

Thais soldiers shot over a group of Cambodian Civilians who crossed the border to log the trees over Thai territory. A boy who was 16 years old was arrested by the Thais soldier, and later they burned him alive. The boy was dead.

This violence is not uncommon for Thais soldiers who are very aggressive and violent with its neighbors. There has no any human right groups been filed any complains with this violence and non human action. Many Cambodian Civilians, who crossed to Thai illegally, were raped, killed, and jailed. The actions of Thais soldiers and its government has angered by many Cambodian people. And they believe that this actions will make more cambodian people to hate Thais.

Who could help to find the justice for the 16 years old boy?

This blog is intended to let the world know how Thais soldiers and its government treat their neighbors. How do you think about Thais and its government?

It is a shame that over 90 percent of the people of Thailand preach Buddhism (a religion of peace and compassion), but practice sinfulness. Like wise, Thai military personnel have very strong Buddhist faith; yet they are extremely barbaric at heart. The murdering and burning alive of several unarmed Cambodian children is a testament to their evil and cowardly act. Now the whole world know the root cause of the unrest in Sourthern Thailand. It's nice to know that a few brave people in the South has finally stood up for their rights against the Thai military tyranny. In the past, Thailand was getting away with so many murderings and rapings of Cambodian and Vietnamese refugees. Today, the United Nations must be legitimized and see that Thailand be held accountable for their crime against humanity. If left unpunished, Thailand will continue to freely abused human right especially to the current Burmese refugees .

To the evil and hypocrite Thais and their murderist king Bhumibol Adulyadej (ruler of Thailand's military): justice may be blinded, but karma will eventually catch up to all your sins. In fact, it’s already starting to happen as we speak; political turmoil, civil unrest, fighting in the North and South, declined economy, and soon another major tsunami. You better start praying to your Lord Buddha for forgiveness to all your sins now, for he may spare your souls. Mark these words for all times: What goes around, comes around (justice will prevail in one way or another).

“The Thais have a long, long history of shooting Cambodian civilians, indeed they massacred thousands fleeing from the Khmer Rouge and Vietnamese at Preah Vihear and were guilty of torture, thievery, rape and murder during the 70's and 80's, supplying Pol Pot and his KR Cadres with weapons, logistics, tactical support and even a special forces unit to guard Brother Number One himself. Unsurprising that Thai history books show none of these atrocities but rest assure the Cambodians remember them well.

Some posters saying we should be wary of Cambodian propaganda, I'd suggest we are more sceptical of the Thai military's version of events given their atrocious record of deceit and lies when it comes to their conduct, most recently of course the murder of the Rohigyna boat people and subsequent cover-up.”

To Justice:

Folk, i am human and I have blood and flesh like you and others on this unique planet. As i wrote in the previous post, I neither defend thai soldiers or i wanna make fun the boy incidence. When you become too extreme and forget the root of the cause, thing will turn even worse. Khmer Rough regime is an example, poor turned to be so furious against the rich and Pol Pot manage to manipulate them and use as a tool to slaughter their citizens. They not only kill the rich but also working class who the structure of the society. Never focus on America or Europ as standing on our side, they are the one who sell weapon and ignite the war everywhere on earth. What should we do is to enforce our government to response to the issue diplomatically and act upon the problem of unemployment who cause thousand of cambodians to flee to another country in return for jobs. By 2012, about 300,000 youth Cambodia will entry the work force each year, and the number will increase exponentially. If government continue its frog's step policy, the result be chaos. more cambodian will flee to thailand and similar incidence will take place and i am sure you guy will have to prepare to curse thai authority again! May the boy reborn in a better world in the new incarnation!

DL,whaaaaaaaaaaaaat?????? what does Thai soldiers burned that boy alive has anything to do with Khmer Rouge, America, or Europe? You're making some wild pointless delusional connection between the boy's death. I know you're Thai and for whatever the Thai soldiers did to that boy or to any Cambodian citizen for that matter, you think it was the false of Cambodian government for not protecting its people and the death of the boy by the hands of Thai soldiers was justifyable. So it was the false of Cambodia, Thailand was just protecting its border and national sovereignty, right?

Well, maybe Cambodia should change its policy toward Thai citizen that crossed into Cambodia illegally. That is to allow Cambodian soldiers to capture, kill by decapitation(cut the heads off), and toss those heads back into Thailand soil and blame the Thailand government, sounded fair, right DL?

Hey, I am DL;I am not Thai and I generally don't like Thai government. And I would like to respond to the latest anonymous! I know you are an extremist and for sure your blood is boiling. What you said tells me a lot how barbaric you are and you are no different from the Khmer Rough cadre who like to slaughter people for the sake of your blindness perception. You don't look at the cause root, but rather have short sight at what happen in front of you. Imagine you are an intellectual but seem to be so blind, how other Cambodians can see the better better future. I totally agree that Thai soldier's behavior is barbaric or subhuman but if you are the one who hate it and end up to commit similar atrocity, then you are also barbaric and subhuman. I DIDN'T say that like or support what Thai soldiers did; instead I gave suggestion what should be done. My previous post aimed at someone called "Justice". And I am sure it was not a delusional connection to point out about American people whom that person ( Justice) said stood with Cambodian people. If you wanna behead Thai soldiers, go ahead my friend! I wish you good luck! A civilized citizen never respond that way....only barbaric person could do that like our leader: Hun Sen, responded his protesters by throwing hand grenade to the crow of demonstrator. That is how you wanna respond, right? Buddha bless you!
