Phay Spihan tells motorcycle owners to register protests through their local MPs regarding recent crackdowns

Hundreds of unregistered motorcycle and vehicle owners from across the country have staged their protests in several provinces against corrupt custom and tax officials who extortionately demanded exorbitant payments in bribery to have their motorcycles/vehicles registered.

Hundreds of motorists in Battambang, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville and Banteay Meanchey have protested to demand that officials stop asking for unreasonable amount of money to ahve their motorcycles/vehicles properly registered.

Recently, Prime Minister Hun Sen ordered that all unregistered vehicles be impounded. However, the government will give a 50% discount to owners who register their vehicles before the expiration of the dateline. But, according to many motorists, officials still charge them 100% and on top of that they issued fines to them also.

Mr. Srey Tieng, director of Battambang Custom Department and Dr. Pen Simon, Director-General of Cambodia's Customs, cannot be reached for comments regarding complaints from motorists.

However, Mr. Phay Siphan (pictured), spokesman for the Council of Ministers, has told the Motherland Radio that motorists should bring their complaints to their local MPs so they could make representations of their behalf to the government. He said motorists should write letters to their local members of parliament to intervene on their behalf in getting the officials to heed their demand for discounts for their vehicle registrations.

Since Prime Minister Hun Sen issued the order, more than 93,000 motorised vehicles, especially motorcycles have been impounded.
