Hundreds of Vietnamese nationals living in Cambodia on 2nd September commemorated the 64th anniversary of Vietnam National Day when the Vietnamese nationalists led by Ho Chi Minh (pictured) defeated French troops and briefly declared Vietnam's independence in 1945.

More than 100 Vietnamese nationals and Vietnamese embassy officials gathered at the Khmer-Vietnamese Friendship Memorial in front of Wat Botum Vadey pagoda in Phnom Penh on Wednesday to lay wreath in the commemoration of those killed during the struggle against the French.

A Vietnamese embassy official who spoke on condition of anonymity said Vietnam National Day is celebrated every year in countries around the world where there are ethnic Vietnamese living.

Mr. Mann Chhoeun, Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh, said the Vietnam National Day commemoration ceremony in Phnom Penh on Wednesday has been held with proper authorization from the Phnom Penh Municipal Authority. He added the commemotation of the Vietnam National Day does not affect the Cambodian society and the Khmer people.

Does Khmer in Kampuchea Krom(now south Vietnam) have the same fair rights to celebrate Cambodia's Independence Day like the Vietnamese living in Cambodia?

It's true, while Vietnamese in Cambodia are free to do whatever they want, our Khmer Krom brothers and sisters have been deprived of their basic rights, they have been persecuted everyday and they have been evicted from their lands constantly. The Cambodian government doesn't care of their plight. Sad really.
