Mu Sochua seeks to restore parliamentary immunity

PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald) Oppositon Sam Rainsy lawmaker Mu Sochua said she would send a letter to the Phnom Penh Court of Appeal Thursday asking for her parliamentary immunity to be restored.

“They told me the judge is waiting for me to write them a letter. So I wrote a letter to them,” she said.
“Justice will exist when there is a legal and constitutional response. I have a position as a lawmaker but I am a victim of accusations and unfair hearings."

Senior Cambodian People's Party lawmaker Cheam Yeap said Wednesday that he had not yet received any information concerning the case. He added that it was up to the Ministry of Justice and the judge to contact the National Assembly to restore Mu Sochua's immunity.

Prime Minister Hun Sen sued Mu Suchoa for defamation in 2009 after she accused him of making derogatory remarks about her.  In 2010, the court ruled that she forego 16.5 million riel in salary after she refused to pay a fine.
