SEEING poverty first-hand opened the eyes of two Canley Heights RSL Club staff members.
Chheng Tang and Ivy Dinh recently returned from a mission trip to Cambodia, an initiative taken on with enthusiasm by the club.
“Canley Heights wanted to send two people on the Cambodian trip … and I was approached by my operations manager, Michelle Baxter,” Ms Tang said.
“I was born in Cambodia and I’ve always wanted to do charity or volunteer work so this was perfect for me.”
The club board was approached by members of the Barrington Group Australia, which provides security services to the RSL, and sponsors the charitable initiative help2help.
The pair joined a group of nine, making and distributing food packages to impoverished villages while also delivering sanitary products and pigs for breeding.
They also supplied local hospitals with medicine and baby clothes and helped build a house.
“It was an eye opener,” Ms Tang said. “Sometimes we take everything for granted and now you just appreciate everything and everyone around you.”
The pair would like to go back and take more people with them.
“I would love for everyone to experience what we experienced,’’ Ms Tang said.
