China pledges to buy 100,000 tons of rice from Cambodia

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- A Chinese company is preparing a memorandum of understanding with Ministry of Commerce (MOC) pledging to buy 100,000 tons of rice from Cambodia, according to Sun Chanthol, Minister of Commerce.

The intention was made clear during a meeting between the Minister of Commerce and Song Xiaoguo, an economic and commercial counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia and a member of committee of Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF). The minister also urged support from both CRF and Song Xiaoguo to help bring the memorandum into reality.

Song Xiaoguo has vowed to help and cooperate with MOC and CRF in expanding market for Cambodian rice in China while Sok Puthivuth, President of CRF, asks Song Xiaoguo to either reduce or eliminate tax for importing Cambodian rice into China.

Son Chanthol along with CRF members and Song Xiaoguo have agreed to let a group of Cambodian delegates to China in order to promote Cambodian rice in the mid of August this year. A memorandum of understanding with Chinese companies is expected to take place during the visit.
