Sochua ‘off limits to US Embassy’

Despite multiple requests, the US Embassy has not been given access to visit dual citizen Mu Sochua since her arrest last Tuesday, officials said yesterday.
“Consular officers attempted to visit Mu Sochua the evening she was arrested but were not permitted to see her and multiple requests for access since her detention at Prey Sar prison have not yet been granted,” US Embassy spokesman John Simmons told the Post.
According to the Vienna Convention, which Cambodia acceded to in 2006, consular officers “shall have the right to visit a national of the sending State who is in prison, custody or detention, to converse and correspond with him and to arrange for his legal representation”.
Council of Ministers spokesman Phay Siphan said he had “no idea” why the embassy had not yet been granted access and referred questions to the municipal court.
Court officials could not be reached for comment yesterday.
