PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- Kem Sokha, first vice president of the National Assembly and acting president of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) met Tuesday with representatives of civil society.

Tib Teav, representatives of the groups, said that during the meeting with Kem Sokha, they discussed issue of refugees who will be sent to Cambodia, and support of national and international community in preventing the refugees from being sent to live in Cambodia from Australia.

Cambodia and Australia signed a controversial deal last month to have refugees who are seeking asylum in Australia transferred to Cambodia from Australia.

The deal signed between Cambodia's Interior Minister Sar Kheng and Australia's Immigration Minister Scott Morrison was criticized by human rights groups and opposition parties of the two parties, and opposed by the refugees who are now living in Nauru island.

However, the Cambodian and Australian governments have reiterated their commitment to go ahead with the refugee agreement, despite persistent criticism.

The commitment was made during a meeting on Friday between the Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop on the sideline of an Asia-Europe summit in Italy.

Cambodia will soon send its officials to interview the refugees before they will be sent to settle in Cambodia. The transfer is based on voluntary principle.

According to Foreign Affairs secretary of State, less than 10 refugees will be sent to Cambodia in the trial stage.

The Australian government takes responsibility for all expenses.
