Cambodians Want to Study in Australia

PHNOM PENH (Khmer Times) – Cambodian students are making their way to Australia to take advantage of educational opportunities offered by universities down under.

More than 500 students already have enrolled in Australian schools this year according to IDP Education, an international student placement service.

Last year, 1,200 Cambodians studied in Australia, half at university level.

By contrast, a decade ago, only 300 Cambodians studied in Australia, Allison Burrows, Australia’s Ambassador to Cambodia, told the Khmer Times in an interview earlier this year. Education is now a major “export” for this English-speaking nation of 24 million people.

To push more students to apply, IDP Education ran an educational fair here Tuesday.

“In light of the Asean Economic Integration 2015, obtaining an international education can be one of the most powerful assets for Cambodians in order to compete in the job market,” said Sreng Mao, IDP country director.

At the exhibition, students and parents sought information on topics of study as well as visas to Australia. High school and university level placements were available.

“In general, the students who want to pursue study in Australia must have good language usage,” Mr. Mao said, referring to spoken and written English. Before students could register for international studies, they have to take the IELTS examination, an English language proficiency test.

Kok Kimmeng, a 22-year-old university student studying accounting, said she wanted to get an accounting degree in Australia.

“I learned that the educational system in Australia is good and I hope to get more job opportunities after I graduate,” said Mr. Kimmeng.

Ly Hong wants to pursue his Information and Technology degree in Australia at the end of July. In order to register to attend an Australian university, he said he has to get a higher IELTS score.

For postgraduate students, scholarship opportunities are offered by Australia.

“The Australian government provides 55 Australia Awards scholarships to outstanding Cambodian students every year for postgraduate study,” said Mr. Mao.

Information about scholarship programs are on the IDP Education website and in every Australian Center for Education in Cambodia.

Begin of Drgunzet's comment.

In America, I used to tutor the Khmer students. They were the most stupid and sloooooooow students I have even met. They were way below any other race. I wonder if the Khmer are the same human specie with other human races.

Really, what happened? Oh, I remember now. Khmer race got creamed by the Thais repeatedly. Smart and brave Khmer fought in battles and died/captured. Dumb and coward Khmer ran like ducks all over the places. Khmer today are the descendants from those dumb coward Khmers.

Dear Khmer and foreign readers:

Drgunzet is a Vietnamese/Yuon spammer or troller based in Boise, Idaho.

This Yuon/Vietnamese troublemaker have created messes and messed up with everyone on the internet forum.

This Vietnamese poster has tried too hard to protect his Vietnamese/Yuon from having bad reputation, being embarrassed, being called nation of thieves (who took land from China "North Vietnam", Champa "Central Vietnam" and Cambodia/Khmer Kampuchea Krom "Southern Vietnam"), and being called a manipulators (lobbyists) at the UN to make a fool and confusion, and beyond until today.
