Government of Cambodia reacts back to U.S. statement on 11 CNRP activists

Published: 26-Jul-15

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald)— The Press and Quick Reaction Unit of the Office of the Council Minister reacted yesterday back to the U.S. statement on the prosecution of eleven Cambodia National Rescue Party’s activists.

According to the press release, it's exaggerate and outright lie that the US Embassy considered serious violent riots as a peaceful protest action is the right to freedom of expression.

Yesterday the U.S. Embassy said it has been closely monitoring the case of the 11 CNRP activists convicted of insurrection arising out of July 2014 protests in Phnom Penh and expressed its deeply concerned by the process leading to these convictions.

U.S. also urged the Cambodian government to carefully review its judicial processes to ensure that they are complete and transparent and in accordance with domestic law and international norms.

Among the 11 CNRP’s activists who were sentenced from 7 to 20 years in jail for leading an illegal protest that turned violent near the Freedom Park in mid-July 2014, there was also Meach Sovannara, a U.S. citizen.
